2007 Community Benefit Report
It is with pride that Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center does
not receive county tax dollars for the hospital. When the hospital
has earnings, they are reinvested in the form of new construction
and infrastructure improvements; new technology to help diagnose
patients; and health prevention & education programs.
As a not-for-profit hospital, Neosho Memorial provides a number
of services that meet community needs, despite the fact that they
have a negative impact on the organization's bottom line. In 2007,
NMRMC was able to provide community benefit services totaling $23,176,126.
Care Car Program
One community benefit provided by Neosho Memorial is patient transportation.
The Care Car helps people who do not have the ability or, perhaps,
the funds to travel to the medical center. In 2007, NMRMC funded
the program at $32,987. Since 1996, patient transportation to and
from the medical center in fuel efficient, locally, purchased-cars
has helped over 41,000 people maintain access to care.
Health Education and Outreach
From weekly, free blood pressure screenings at G&W Foods to
annual health fairs at local businesses, Neosho Memorial helps people
maintain and improve their health. Medical Center staff members
are active providing a variety of health education seminars, classes
and health fairs.
One-on-one or on-line, Neosho Memorial's website offers a comprehensive
health library and 11 different health newsletters. Just another
way the Medical Center fulfills its mission to promote, improve
and restore health
.
As a training site for several health careers, Neosho Memorial
invested time teaching and mentoring new health professionals. In
addition, the Medical Center made a significant investment in the
education and training of its staff. From leadership development
to nursing skills to patient satisfaction, NMRMC staff members have
undergone hundreds of hours of training in their chosen professions
and reflected the commitment to developing the B.E.S.T. staff in
Kansas.
During 2007, $213,643 was invested in health education and community
outreach.
Ambulance Subsidies
Another community benefit was Neosho Memorial's financial support
of the Chanute ambulance service. The unreimbursed cost of this
service equaled $108,000 in 2007. This vital service provided better
access to quality care for area residents.
Charity Care
Neosho Memorial maintains an active Charity Care program. In the
first four months of 2008, the Charity Care program provided $430,578.00
of patient assistance. In 2007, the Charity Care program gave $3,595,920
worth of service to area residents.
This program is a lifeline for many people. In 2007, Kansas insurers
listed 12.3% of the population as uninsured. NMRMC's Charity Care
offered some of these patients a more manageable means to quality
health care.
Medicare and Medicaid Shortfalls
In most cases, government sponsored health insurance does not cover
the entire cost of care. This is called a "shortfall"
in coverage. During 2007, 63% of Neosho Memorial's inpatients were
beneficiaries of either Medicare or Medicaid. The hospital's shortfall
from the Medicaid program in 2007 totaled $6,640,706 with a Medicare
shortfall of $16,535,420.
